5 TIPS TO MANAGE STRESS AND STAY HEALTHY

When I imagined my live after yoga teacher training I thought by then I would have it figured out. Keeping balance in my life even in times of stress. I would be perfectly serene in the eye of the storm. I would practice yoga every morning in the light of dawn with a smile on my face. I would start each day with a homemade green smoothie.

The reality looks a bit different. There are still times when I am working too much. When I don’t sleep enough. When I don’t exercise enough and eat way too much chocolate.

But that’s okay. I learned not to give in to that nagging thought that I am not good enough. These expectations I have in the back of mind how I should live my life as a yoga teacher. Because life doesn’t work like that. There is never lasting balance, there always will be ups and downs. Something’s gotta give if there simply isn’t enough time in the day to do it all. So instead of giving myself a hard time because I missed my yoga class or had a chocolate snack in the afternoon (or two), I practice acceptance and self-love. It is what it is. Times will change. And with this mindset I actually managed to keep up my yoga practice and a healthy lifestyle, instead of giving up completely. Together with the following tipps I manage stressful times so much better these days.

Here are 5 tips that help me manage stress and stay healthy even when my life is crazy.

1. Meditate Every Day

Meditation can make a big difference in your mindset and your ability to face everything that life throws at you. If you are new to meditation I suggest to start with 5-10 minutes a day. A great book about meditation and how to start your own practice is “Mindfulness in Plain English” by Bhante Henepola Gunaratana.

 

2. One Thing at a Time

When super busy try not to multi-task. You might think you need to do more than one thing at a time because you have so much to do, but it will only mean you take longer and feel more stressed and overwhelmed. Studies have found that multitasking actually reduces your productivity by 40%! It takes more time to switch tasks than stick with them until you finish. Instead work on one thing at a time, in a place where you can concentrate.

 

3. This Too Shall Pass

When life gets crazy it’s comforting to know that there will be an end to this particular stressful period. “This too shall pass” is my mantra. If you can’t see an end to your situation, best to ask for help and try to figure out a solution. Simply going on and on until you reach breaking point can’t be it (trust me, I’ve been there).

 

4. Plan Fun Activities And Downtime

Plan some fun activities and actual downtime into your schedule, like dinner with a close friend, a yoga class or a trip away on a Sunday. You need rest and recuperation and not giving yourself even a little bit of time for this will only leave you more stressed out. Until you come to a point where you won’t be able to do anything anymore, collapse in front of the TV and moan about your boring life that’s only about work…

 

5. Don’t Be Too Hard On Yourself

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Love yourself and be proud of everything that you do. We all have such high expectations on how we should be living our life. Learning to let go of these expectations and accept what’s going on can be the most important lesson to help you through hard times.
