THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO YOGA ON THE GILI ISLANDS
After a few months in Ubud in Bali I craved some serious beach time and left for the Gili islands. By that time I was already addicted to all the great yoga classes available in Ubud and was curious – would I be able to maintain my yoga practice in the Gilis? Luckily there are yoga places now on every island and so there are a lot of options for yoga on the Gili Islands.
Where can you practice yoga on the Gili Islands?
If you’ve never heard about the Gilis, they are a group of 3 tiny islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air and can easily be reached by boat from Bali or Lombok. While you wouldn’t be able to say that they are undiscovered in any way (tourism is booming here), compared to Bali it’s a hidden and quiet beach paradise. Well, at least Gili Meno and Gili Air are, Gili Trawangan is a story of it’s own. After the crazy traffic in Ubud I especially loved that there are no cars or motorbikes on the islands, everything and everyone is carried by bicycles and horse carts. Of course there are amazing beaches, stunning sunsets and friendly locals. And quite a few places to practice yoga, too! Of course I had to check some of them out, here is an overview of all the yoga places on the Gili islands.
Gili Trawangan Yoga
On Gili Trawangan I went to a few yoga classes at Gili Trawangan Yoga. They have a cute yoga shala a little bit set back from the main street close to the harbor and offer accommodation in beautifully decorated new bungalows too. I loved Kate’s vinyasa yoga classes, she is up there with my favorite yoga teachers from Ubud. Attached is a freediving school so as a bonus you have some pretty cute guys joining the yoga from time to time.
The Yoga Place Gili Trawangan
Gili Yoga place opened up in 2014 and is located a little bit further away from the beach in the centre of Gili Trawangan town. They have a yoga shala with a view over the roofs and a cute little cafe where they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and some of the best salads and fresh juices on the island. Gili Yoga Place offers up to 7 classes a day as well as meditation and movie nights, there is something on the yoga menu for everybody.
H2O Yoga and Meditation Center on Gili Air
I haven’t actually visited Gili Air myself but I heard good things about H20. They offer twice daily yoga classes, meditation sessions, workshops and a variety of holistic healing treatments. They also host yoga teacher trainings as well as yoga and meditation retreats.
Mao Meno on Gili Meno
Mao Meno is a beautiful small resort on Gili Meno and specializes in retreats and events. They also offer daily drop in yoga classes, varying by season. It’s hidden in the inside of the island and I loved the peaceful and serene atmosphere.
Seri Resort on Gili Meno
Seri Resort offers daily drop in yoga classes in one of the most beautiful yoga shalas I’ve ever seen. Okay, I am bit biased because I actually have been teaching a few classes there, but it really is an amazing place. When I was there they had big plans to add a spa and a yogic café too.
