In October 2015 I have been volunteering as a yoga teacher in Cambodia at Banteay Srey Spa in Kampot. In this post I’ll give you a bit more information about my job.

About Banteay Srey Spa in Kampot

Banteay Srey is not a normal spa but a non-profit project, which offers young Cambodian women from difficult backgrounds an escape from poverty and helplessness. In the spa they are taught job and entrepreneurial skills, giving them better life-chances. They get accommodation and food at the spa as well as a lot of training (including yoga and English-lessons taught by the volunteers). The spa is open to women only and offers all spa services you could wish for: massages, scrubs, steam bath, facials, manicure and pedicures, even henna tattoos and hair styling. Everything is really affordable – plus they use their own hand-made oils, creams and scrubs. It also offers a vegetarian cafe with yummy healthy food and fresh smoothies and a yoga deck. Yoga classes are offered at 9:30 am and 5:00 pm every day but Tuesday, when the spa is closed.

My Job as a Volunteer Yoga Teacher in Cambodia at Banteay Srey

As a volunteer yoga teacher I taught 1-2 classes a day and helped out at the reception and with social media and marketing work. As I was volunteering I wasn’t paid, but free accommodation and food was included. Though I actually moved to a guesthouse because the offered bungalow was a bit too rustic for me… well, everybody has different expectations, my backpacker days are most definitely over and I’m happy to have a little bit more comfort. There are always 2 volunteers and what you will do depends on your background and skills. Skills always needed are for example English teaching or spa services, as well as of course being certified as a yoga teacher. New yoga teachers are welcome too, it’s a great opportunity to get practice teaching yoga.

Because of my additional workload with Yowunga and other projects I decided to leave after one month, but I still think it’s an amazing project and well worth your time if you are interested in volunteering. Feel free to contact me if you want more information!
